Itinerary

Day 01
Upon arrival in Kigali (flight booked by Agent) you are met at the airport by our local representative and transferred to the hotel. Following a detailed briefing and an introduction to your English speaking driver guide, the afternoon will be spent on a city tour of Kigali including a visit to the Genocide Memorial.

Day 02
After an early breakfast, drive NW to Ruhengeri, the main base town for gorilla tracking (approximately 90 minutes drive) on a good paved road through the countryside with its beautiful terraced hills that are so characteristic of the rural Rwanda. Upon arrival, there is a briefing by the Volcanoes National Park’s guides on how to behave in the forest and in the presence of mountain gorillas. You then enter the park for a gorilla trek which will take you until around midday depending on where you find them. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. It is important to take plenty of water. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film is recommended. It can rain at a few minutes notice, hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including zip lock bags for cameras and film. After the trek, lunch will be at Gorilla Volcanoes Hotel. If time permits, visit the markets, villages and local communities or an optional visit to the little known by compellingly beautiful twin lakes Bulera and Ruhondo.

Day 03
You have a second opportunity to track gorillas this morning followed by lunch at the lodge. Drive to your resort on Lake Kivu (1.5 hours). Spend the afternoon at the lake. Lake Kivu is a 2,650 sq. km. extraordinarily beautiful inland sea enclosed by steep, green terraced hills along eastern Rwanda. Three resort towns of Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu are located along it’s shores and are connected by a wild roller-coaster road that tumbles through lush plantain fields and relic patches of misty rainforest to offer sweeping views over the blue waters with the nearby Virunga volcanoes providing a spectacular backdrop. The road winds endlessly in a countless number of twists and turns and the common storm clouds lend a ruggedly romantic panorama to this region.  Gisenyi, the most developed of these resorts is set on a sandy beach lined with swaying palms and colonial-era hotels that exude an atmosphere of tropical languor.

Full day at leisure to explore the local area (all excursions can be booked and paid direct by clients)

Day 05
After a leisurely breakfast, enjoy the scenic transfer back to Kigali airport for your departure flight (booked by Agent).

Deposit & Permits
Non-refundable deposit of 30% plus US$ 1500.00 per person per trek permit fee is required at the time of booking to secure gorilla permits and space within the lodges.  Travellers’ names as appearing on their passports along with nationality and passport numbers must be provided at the time of booking to allow purchase of gorilla permits.  Permits cannot be transferred or refunded.
